Watering the Goulburn River
24 February 2016
The Victorian Environmental Water Holder (VEWH) has authorised the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority to deliver up to 10 GL of Victorian environmental water to the Goulburn River to 'wet' and support the recovery of river bank vegetation while also increasing habitat for water bugs and fish.
This period of higher flow (known as a 'fresh') will be delivered with approximately 37 GL of water from the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder and water transferred through the system for other uses.
It will be released into the river in early March, for around three weeks.
Ongoing monitoring of fish and vegetation in the region will help us understand the results of this and future environmental watering.
This VEWH approval is in line with the Seasonal Watering Plan 2015-16 and is the first VEWH water contribution to the Goulburn River this year.
